Closing the door, you leave the cabin and begin walking. Since it is the morning, the sun is in the east, so you decide to walk in the opposite direction. In the distance, you hear what sounds like passing cars, although the sound is somewhat different from the car engines you are used to hearing. Realizing that this is your best bet towards finding civilization, you decide to continue forward.
After what seems like hours of walking, you reach the edge of the forest. In front of you lies an open highway. After quickly hiding back into the trees due to your recent change, the car that has just passed you is an old jalopy. Looking closer, you see more of them driving up and down the road. Even stranger, the road has no markings and is nothing more than a fifteen foot wide slab of concrete. When the traffic subsides, you leave your hiding place and start walking along the side of the highway facing traffic.
After walking a short distance, you see a road sign at the foot of a concrete bridge crossing a small creek. Quickly crossing to the other side of the road, you decide to investigate the road sign closer. It says: OREGON US 99. Thinking back to history class, you remember that Highway 99 was once the major road along the west coast before the interstates existed.
It then dawns on you. Somehow, not only have you changed, but you have also travelled back in time to Oregon during the Great Depression. Realizing that the situation can’t possibly get any worse, you start thinking about where to go. Going south on 99 will lead to California and going north will lead to Portland and Seattle. What will you do now?
