"Hey, it even has the inscription. That's really cool, Nate," said Mom.
"What's the inscription say Mom?" asked Chris, looking at Nate and smiling.
"It says..."
"Mom..." started Nate.
"...In Canis Corpore Transmuto" finished Mom.
"Oh No..." cried out Nate. Mom looked up at her eldest son and saw the strands of white and black fur growing out and his ears growing and flopping over. His nose turned back as did his lips.
"Oh my god..."
"Mom, I can explain..." said Nate, as he talked she could see his teeth were growing into fangs.
"This is so cool!" exclaimed Chris
He watched as the white fur slowly grew out over his hands and arms. He watched as his nails once again turned black and into claws. He could feel the fur grow in around the rest of his body too as his hands and feet turned into paws and his face grew out into a canine snout.
"Oh my baby...I'm so sorry."
"It's okay Mom. Really it is. I'll turn back into myself in a couple of hours."
"You can still talk?" asked Chris.
"Of course I can. The ring is just like the one in the movie. Anytime anyone reads the inscription aloud, I turn into a dog," replied Nate. "And if you hadn't been such a sneak, maybe I could've kept this to myself."
"I'm sorry. I just wanted to see you turn into a dog," replied Chris.
"I guess you guys were bound to find out eventually anyway."
Mom, still in shock, dropped the ring on the table. She ran her hands through her son's fur, trying to take it all in.
"This is a lot to adjust to. But it'll be okay. You just can't use that ring anywhere but at home. If anyone saw you turn into a dog...I don't know what they'd do." said Mom.
"I promise," replied Nate.
"Well, Chris, I guess you're on dish duty," said Mom.
"But Mom..." whined Chris.
"Don't but Mom me. You should have thought of that before you turned your brother into a dog."
Chris watched as Mom scratched Nate behind his ear.
"Oh wow, that feels really good." said Nate.
Chris reached out and grabbed the ring when they weren't looking, smiling to himself.
