I resisted the temptation to join Amanda in her meeting. I'm sure it wasn't all that interesting, and she really needed to get focused for the day. Besides, she had a wish she could make. I wondered what she would do with it. Hopefully I wouldn't be looking for a book, cat, another woman, or undoing something she said in haste. I'm sure just having the ability was keeping her on edge as it was.
Instead, I walked up the empty halls and floors of the library until I returned to third floor and the table Amanda and I learned more about the ring and each other. The books that were on the table at 4 had disappeared. I assumed the library staff had come by and reshelved them. Amanda said the library opened at 7:30. It was 7:25 when I sat down at the desk and reappeared. I made a wish for a book on the ring to appear. A small pamphlet appeared before me. I quickly scanned it and it was 12 pages in all. It was so little for such a powerful thing.
The book explained that the ring was created about 75 years ago by a powerful sorceress named Rebekka who lived in the Alps. In its simple brass body she had summoned and concentrated ancient magics. It was to be her ring to wield without reducing her own magical talents. She did not want to loose her magic, a natural tendency for all sorcerers due to the thermodynamics of the world. While she could reverse the trends of chaos, she and her magic was still bound to weaken over the centuries, especially with each spell she cast. As a result, although ageless thanks to the woman who trained her, she did not want to waste her own powers.
Yet, her boyfriend stole it. Peter was a mere mortal and had become enamored with her. Due to her love for him, Rebekka gave the ring to Peter. However, he soon became engrossed with it and didn't want her to have it. He made a wish which turned Rebekka into a glass sculpture. Rebekka was able to restore herself to flesh after 50 years of watching the world with an icy stare. Peter had made a mistake with the ring and it passed from him and was lost in a cave in Germany. It remained undiscovered until an archeology group found it last year. The woman who gave me the ring was part of that group and only discovered the rings ability 2 months ago. The ring was not considered an archeological find due to its newness. Most figured it was just a year or two old at best.
And so, now I had the ring. I knew Rebekka was alive based on what the book said. She was also immortal, too. I wondered what she was doing now. Did she want the ring back? I hoped not. Just how powerful was she? The book had a black and white picture of Rebekka. She appeared to be cute beautiful.
