Kelly woke up first, yawning as she stretched her small arms and legs. As she woke, she smiled as she thought of the strange dream. She'd dreamed she'd been turned into a little girl, and that her daughter had grown into a woman. She'd dreamed it was because she refused to let her daughter do grown up things, and with every time she tried to assert her authority, she'd become younger. Still half asleep, the seven year old didn't notice the larger form she'd slept against, and instead slipped out of the bed, not even noticing that the distance between it and the floor was much longer. Padding into the bathroom, rubbing her eyes, she moved to the sink to wash her face. Strange...the sink felt taller than it should be. Blinking through bleary eyes, Kelly slowly began to wake. She saw that her eyes were level with the bottom of her sink, that the bathroom seemed larger than it should be .... and that she was smaller than she ought to be.
"No..." her voice trickled with a note of childish fear. Glancing around frantically she found a stepstool and dragged it to the sink. Climbing up it, she stared helplessly at her reflection. A seven year old girl with blonde hair and frightened blue eyes stared back at her. Her round upturned nose had a spattering of freckles, and her face would have dimples if she had smiled. Opening her mouth, Kelly saw the gaps between her teeth, and one felt like its loose. Gripping the sink with tiny fingers, her heart sank. It was all true, and she hadn't turned back.
Suddenly she remembered. Today was a school day! Katie was supposed to be heading there, and she was supposed to be going to work! Jumping down from the stool, she ran over and started shaking the adult woman on the bed.
"Katie! Katie, wake up!"
Katie grumbled, "Jus a few more minutes..."
"Katie you have to get up, it wasn't a dream, we've been changed! If we don't act fast, we're going to both be in trouble!"
Katie slowly woke, and blinked, staring at the seven year old next to her. It took a moment to register everything that happened. Then again, her body wasn't as young and full of energy as it had been, a problem she noted with some trepidation.
"Mom...?"
"Come on! We have to do something." Kelly said. "You have school and I have work!"
Katie stared at her, mind still not fully awake. "School? Work!"
Kelly stared at her, "Please, don't tell me you forgot."
"No I remember, but...I can't go to school like this Mom....and you cant go to work like that..."
"its the magic," Kelly said. "Maybe its part of my lesson. Maybe...maybe its supposed to switch our roles entirely, give me your perspective."
Katie hadn't really thought of it. She didn't really want to go to work. She liked being in charge, but the thought of those responsibilities was boring. "I dont want to go to work though."
Kelly stared at her, "Katie, if this is my lesson about being a kit, it might be yours about being a grown up!" Katie saw her mom's lip quiver...and then she stamped her foot. "You have to go to school."
Katie knew what it was. Her mother was tempting the "power" that had changed her. Katie's real age was six, and one more change would make her that way. If she didn't change her, it might make Mom suspicious, but Katie didn't want to go to work. So...
