Staring at her mom with an annoyed look on her face, Katie made a silent wish and a second later, her mom felt herself becoming younger again. The small girl watched as her hands and arms became smaller, her legs shortened and her clothes shrink slightly to fit her frame. She looked up, terrified, at the 28 year old daughter lying on the bed.
"You tried to assert your authority over me, mom," Katie said, yawning, still a little bleary eyed. "You tempted the...Universe, or whatever this power is that keeps doing this to you."
"Oh, no," Kellie moaned. "But...What are we going to do for food? Someone here has to work!"
"We'll figure something out, kiddo." Her mom glared at her. "Oh, come on. It was a joke. Let's go downstairs. I'll make us both some breakfast." She yawned again, stretching this time. "And some coffee for me."
Fifteen minutes later, the two sat at their kitchen table, Katie sipping from a cup of coffee, her mom having eggs and toast.
"So what are you going to do today?" Kellie asked, swallowing her food. "Go to my job or...what?"
"I don't know. I don't really know anything about law or preparing court cases. Unless you came with me or something."
Her mom considered this. "Hmm. That's not a bad idea, you know. I could be there to help you, telling you what to do and how to do my job." She paused, before quickly adding, "But--But not in a bossy way, of course. Y-You'd be free to do whatever you wanted. I'd just be your...coach or, or something." She glanced around nervously, afraid the thing that had made her this young would strike again, making her a five year old. Katie looked at her, amused.
A short while later, both were dressed, Katie in one of her mom's pantsuits, carrying her briefcase, Kellie wearing a pair of jeans and a pink t shirt. Climbing into the car with some difficulty, the 6 year old mom fastened her seatbelt and the two were off.
