Weeks later, David finally received his response from the mysterious want ad. It seems they had called his bluff about having other summer work opportunities, and sent only a curt:
"Dear Sir,
At this time we are only accepting in-person applications. Open interviews are conducted daily from 9 until 4:30."
With a glace at the clock, David saw that it was only 11am. With nothing else to do, he quickly showered and dressed himself, then hopped in his father's truck. His drive into the city felt much shorter than the usual hour, as his mind raced. First he reviewed what he had learned to be proper conduct during an interview, then he practiced the stock questions that interviewers typically asked. Once he felt that he was sufficiently prepared for whatever he may be asked, he began to wonder what sort of work he would be doing. A small cringe as his unfortunate experience with transformation led him to think more positive thoughts.
Before he knew it, he was making a left onto Forandring St. Moments after that, he pulled into a spot in front of a nondescript building and put 2 quarters into the meter.
As he approached the building, a moment of uncertainty passed over him. He interpreted the feeling in his stomach as pre-interview jitters and soothed himself by patting himself outside the door to make sure he looked alright.
The lobby of the building was like something he had never seen before. The room was circular, with numerous doors at regular intervals around the perimeter. At the center of the room was what appeared to be a security desk, and it was there that David walked to.
The man at the desk seemed to be annoyed with David's presence. He looked up without saying a word, simply glaring up from where he sat. David hesitated, cleared his throat, and opened his mouth to ask what the procedure was.
Before he could get the first syllable out, the security guard cut him off,
"Just go into the first door that interests you. You'll told what you need to know as you need to know it. Now get going."
David meekly backed away from the table and meandered towards the doors, looking at the strange labels on each of them.
