“Mrs. Sanderson, may I call you Kate?”
Kate blinks in surprise at this stranger knowing her first name. But then she remembers all the paper work that had to be submitted to the kennel manager to get approval for this trip. A trip her brightest student talked her into despite her own misgivings. But then if a boy who was to say it nicely a terror at school can become a model student just from working with dogs well why not give it a try? As after all both the boys parents have told her how wonderful this Sarah Kana is. “Kate is fine as long as I can call you Sarah.”
Sarah smiles pausing to look back at the other woman and take her by the hand. “I’m so glad you decided to bring your class to visit the pack. Its not offend that we get this many humans at once.”
“The pack?” A bit confused now Kate looks to her guide questionly.
“Yes the pack. No room for strangers here of course as everyone is family.”
Oh ok one of those animal rights people Kate decides calming down thinking Sarah not as strange as she had seemed. “So what breed of dog was it you wished to show me?” She asks doing a better job of hiding her nervousness. “I can only take a quick look before I need to get back to the children.”
“Oh you will be very grateful for having taken this moment for yourself. But is there a dog breed you like by chance? As I have a bitch in mind that I think would make a great match for you but of course if you have a breed you always loved from afar that might speed things up.”
“My parents never allowed me to have a dog. Mom said dogs are nasty dirty things and not the proper pet of a lady.”
“Do you mean to say you have always had cats then?” Sarah asks wrinkling her nose ever so slightly in distaste that is hidden seconds after it appears.
In a near by kennel a Great Dane bitch watches the two leggers standing just outside her kennel. Tail wagging the large female presses as close to Sarah as the kennel gate allows then whines softly begging without any shame.
Sarah watches as Kate reaches a hand over to try petting the Dane female seemly without thinking about it then catches herself and clasps her hands before her. “Would you like to pet this beautiful Great Dane Kate?” She can tell the teacher is interested and this surprises her as she would have thought Kate a collie type.
“What? Huh?” Blinking Kate gives herself a shake to clear her thoughts. “Oh no I could not....” She backs up slightly from the Dane kennel only to come closer to that of a bitch German shepherd.
The German shepherd having been watching everything intently had not dared to think she even had a change as most humans see her breed as biters. Well at least the few humans that one of the two leggers had brought back to this wing of the kennel. Undecided she dares give a soft woof while trying to ignore the warning look the Dane is casting in her direction.
