Nate watched David's avatar shrink and heard the crash of something hitting the floor downstairs. No way, he thought. He couldn't allow himself to believe anything had actually happened because of his stupid random input on a computer. On the screen everything about David seemed the same except all of the sliders indicating physical measurements had changed in proportion to his new height.
"New height!" Nate mocked himself. "As if."
But he was already crossing the room and thumping down the steps. When he got to the kitchen he saw broken plates scattered everywhere and a heap of clothes piled randomly on the floor. A cat-sized lump was wriggling around underneath the fabric trying to untangle itself.
"Dad?" Nate whispered in disbelief. Careful of the ceramic shards he lowered himself to the floor just as David's head popped out of the neck hole. They locked eyes and both of them yelled in shock.
