The ramp shuddered under his feet as Trevor stepped off the boat and onto the pier that led to the island. After clearing the ramp, he stopped near the edge of the pier and stared back at the island. He took a deep breath of the cool, salty air, and felt the breeze whisk through his dark red hair. He’d finally arrived. He was at the Animal Resort.
Adjusting the backpack on his shoulder, he started to work his way down the pier to the island’s main gate. Most everyone else getting off the boat had packed about as lightly as he had, and Trevor didn’t have to guess why. Just like him, they weren’t here to spend time at fancy restaurants or go on sightseeing tours. They were here to vacation as animals.
On his way to the main gate, he saw a group of people waiting behind a series of ropes for the pier to clear so they could board the boat back to the mainland. A thin smile crossed his lips when he saw a person wearing a tee shirt that said, “I got in touch with my wild side at the Animal Resort,” another person talking about what it was like being a bighorn sheep in the mountain section of the park, while another admitted they wished they would have chosen being a dolphin when the first got here instead of spending their vacation as a seal. Apparently dolphins were faster.
After checking in at the main gate and confirming his reservation, Trevor made his way to the bus stop and read over the routes the different shuttle busses took to the different sections of the island. With a twinge of satisfaction and a bit of anxiety, Trevor realized he’d be taking the
