Dan continued to move through the aisles as quickly as she could, even as the girl seemingly made more adjustments to her via the app. Thankfully, the adjustments were in the form of her outfit, not anything else. In her haste, Dan didn't notice as, following her outfit changing to a footed onesie pajama, her badge fell off.
Finally, Dan got to the checkout area. Her heart sank as she realized she didn't see the girl anywhere. She took a deep breath to calm herself down. Hopefully that just meant the girl and her mother were continuing the browse the store, not that they had left.
"Well, someone escaped naptime," joked one of the cashiers, a man named Kyle. Dan rolled her eyes. "What cute PJ's. Need us to call your parents, sweetie?"
"What?" Dan asked, perplexed. Why was Kyle acting like she was a regular toddler? She was wearing her badge. ...Wasn't she?
Dan looked down. Her heart sank. She lost her badge! She looked back up at Kyle. She opened her mouth to say something, but before she could, she felt her knees bend into a squat. Thankfully, it was just to pee. But as she visibly wet herself, Dan felt humiliated at the thought of Kyle knowing who she really was. Kyle grabbed his walkie-talkie.
"Hey, can someone from daycare come to checkout?" Kyle said into the radio. "We've got an escapee up here. Looks like she'll need a diaper change once you bring her back."
That was all Dan needed to hear. She bolted away, still peeing as she ran off into the store. What was she going to do? She could try to convince someone her true identity. She could find Eliza, who knew what she currently looked like. She could look for her badge. Or... A thought came to her. She could let herself be caught, and from there, try to explain things or wait. Surely someone would find her badge eventually.
Dan continued to run at top speed, distressed about how her day was going. But at least now that she was separated from her badge, that girl couldn't mess with her anymore.
