Darkness, Cold, and then a lack of any sensation at all. You had suspected that being dead would either be agonizing in some sort of hell, bliss in some form of heaven, or just like it was now. Some form of absolute nothingness, and now all that was left to do was nothing for the rest of time. After what seemed like a long while something happened. An entity that appeared to be a bright orb appeared in front of you and you just kind of stared at it for a moment.
the orb said "Hello lost soul, how is everything with this pointless existence?"
not entirely sure if you could talk you just kind of thought "uneventful until now... can I even communicate without a body?"
the orb explained "in your present form you can't really do anything. Be it talking, eating, hearing, or anything related to any physical world. I am communicating to you with telepathy and I am listening to you with telepathy. Mind if I make you on offer?"
A bit sarcastically you responded "Well it's not like I have anything else to do."
the orb explained "Well I would like to use you to help make a new child in my world."
"What's the catch?"
"Well you see here's the thing... I'm a cleric for our world, and currently our god has left our world... thanks to that happening we no longer have any souls being generated for the use of re-population. In order for anyone to even be able to conceive anymore clerics such as myself have to find lost souls such as yourself and put your soul in our world so it may find it's way into a woman about to conceive. After that you'll be born after a certain amount of time and you'll be able to experience life again. Follow me so far?"
wanting to nod your head you just think "I understand... So if I accept I'll be able to choose who I'm born to?"
the orb thought for a second and then responded "Maybe... we've been doing this for a long time but no one remembers anything from before their birth, myself included. You may have full control, You may have no control, or you may have some amount of limited control. I just don't know, but this is probably the best chance you have of experiencing anything ever again."
you communicated "Sure, why not? I'm already dead what could be worse? Even if my life is agony at least it'll be more interesting than just drifting in this void."
"great, i'm going to cast a spell on you so just make sure you don't resist." you then started to hear a melodious chant and then the orb's light grew brighter and brighter until you started to see the world you would be born into.
You saw a lot of green grass and trees with a village filled with elves, dwarves, and humans. Moving quickly around you also see more asphalt and see towering cities with other sorts of creatures ranging from vampires taking dark alleys everywhere to smaller cat people walking between other creatures or on odd ledges.
the orbs voice talked to you saying "Welcome to Serra, a world of many races and many walks of life. As you've seen communities range from small villages having 1-3 races to giant metropolises having so much diversity that no one is entirely sure how many races and sub-races exist. I hope you find your time here." You felt as if a presence had left you and at some point your entire self was wiped clean as you were born again, but who were you born as?"
