The Anderson family all staggered from their beds the following morning with none of them in particular getting a good night's rest. William was the first one up before it was even light out. He had a quiet breakfast and cup of coffee by himself before getting dressed and heading to work at the University. His entire sense of the world was rocked by last night and he wasn't sure how to deal with it. To top it off, his eldest son willingly wanted to join up with them which he couldn't wrap his head around either. At the same time, part of him was prepared to let him go through with it if it meant he didn't have to. He departed for work early because he hoped throwing himself into work would help distract him from everything that was happening. William felt trapped and he didn't like it.
Nate and Eric woke up next, roughly around the same time as they heard their father depart for work. They both quietly went downstairs after they noticed their mother, Martha, was still in bed. The silently each fixed their breakfast cereal and poured their juice, taking a seat across from one another at the table. They ate in silence until Eric finally spoke.
"Did you really mean what you said last night? That you'd join up with them?" asked Eric.
Nate swallowed his mouthful of cereal and nodded. "Yeah, I think so. I think it would be cool."
"What do you think will happen to the rest of us?"
"Nothing, if you don't want it to. You heard her, only one of us has to and I want to, so the rest of you are off the hook. Why? Are you thinking of joining one too?" Nate leaned forward in interest hoping he'd answer.
Eric shrugged his shoulders. "I dunno, maybe. If you do go through with it, let me know how it is."
"Of course," replied Nate. They resumed eating their Breakfast in peace.
"I wish we got the paper. I miss reading the comics," muttered Eric.
