Saving the World

added 7 years ago O

They’d been talking about it for months. It was all you heard on the news. Everything: tv, radio, blogs, social media, gossip all threw a different spin on it. Dad was following it all, hunched in front of the television. Yesterday, he took mom, my little brother, and I aside and told us. After being backed by a huge lobby of senior citizens, the U.N. had gathered enough support and ratified their Plan to Save the World. He gave a great cheer.

"This is a great day for the planet!"

It was a crowded world, 7.3 billion people running around all competing for resources. Everybody knew that someday the world would run out of food to feed them, water to sustain them, energy to make them comfortable, and there wouldn’t be enough stuff to go around and there would be chaos. There would be famines of starving masses living in overcrowded slums competing for food; Wars between nation-states competing for water and other scarce resources; the four horsemen of War, Famine, Pestilence, and Death.

So they were going to bring it down the world’s population of humans down to 500 million. They weren’t going to kill anybody or anything violent or drastic. It was going to be an orderly reduction. They were simply going to transform the rest into forms that needed fewer resources. They had already set up expensive transformation clinics in just about every city with over 100,000 people. They had the proportions set that they wanted and were going to run test lotteries to pick categories for individual institutionalized populations. The individual would be assigned a category: either inanimate, animal, plant, hybrid, or if they were lucky – unchanged. After a category is assigned, the individual has the opportunity to select his specific form from an online catalog. Only so many people could fill different quotas for unique forms. For example, they would only allow 1 million people to be transformed into passenger pigeons, and as soon as all of those slots were filled, you could not choose a passenger pigeon. This was to give an incentive for volunteers to sign up early to take choice forms. Not that anybody would want to be a passenger pigeon. My friend Kyle called me up two hours after the world announcement. He started talking about this one girl in class that he was sweet on.

"I looked at the inanimate catalog. Electronics... tools... furniture... clothing... I'd volunteer to be her bra anyday. Hah! Better sign up quick, huh?" He babbled on about how his father thought the whole idea was terrible and would cause a lot of misery. It was hard to believe. My dad was so happy. He'd been worrying about the fate of the environment and the human race for decades and now all of his worries were lifted from his shoulders.

There was another category, but it would be rarely seen outside senior citizen demographics. Without the senior citizens, the plan would not have passed. They threw in their support when it was proposed that seniors be given a higher chance of being transformed into children.

I wondered how swiftly the world governments would act on the Plan...
