Julius was the third person to arrive at his lecture class. It was the third time this class was offered in the university, at a time when the once mysterious force known
as "magic" was just becoming public knowledge and acknowledged as real. Magicians were who people turned to when all other doors were closed to them.
Magicians extracted a hefty sum for their services, but magic was generally thought of as expensive to make the first place by the laymen. The freshman courses in
magic was basically for those who had taken some intermediate training and had passed a magic test. These courses generally were aimed at making or acquiring
basic necessities for a professional magician.
The lecturer entered the auditorium "Now that we have finished our review of the basics, it is now time we talk about the purpose of this course. Do any of you
know what a familiar is?"
A hand rose in the back, "A black cat."
The instructor nodded, "A black cat may be a familiar, but a familiar can be any object or organism that has a strong bond on the magical world. The trick is to use
the familiar as anchor and create a channel of energy from the familiar to you. Try to use the power of legend to increase the magical bond on the object. You will
be graded on how much you increase your magical power. An ‘A' would be an increase of ninety percent or more..."
Later that day Cody came back from his midterms and plopped himself in front of his video games with a sigh.
"Something wrong Cody?" Julius asked looking up from his textbooks.
"I don't think I did well on my finals. Sometimes I wonder why I am even here."
"It's all right, Cody. Just work a little harder the rest of the quarter and you'll be fine."
Cody looked downcast, "I really don't know."
"Well maybe if you spent a little more time studying and a little less playing video games you'd do better."
"I guess so" Cody replied.
